At only twenty three years of age, Kierrie Johnson found himself in the mob of celebration under the BC Place roof last season as the BC Lions captured their sixth Grey Cup in a victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

As a rookie, one would figure that Johnson might have found himself along the sidelines cheering on the more established Lions receivers.  However Johnson used the biggest game of the season to help showcase his future with the club, completing two receptions for 81 yards, including a 66 yard scamper for the end zone.

Eight months later, Johnson found himself starting in the first two Lions games of the season, both of which were victories, both of which Johnson played a small but valuable role for the home team.

Johnson’s breakout season has been halted for 6-8 weeks

While his stats may not show the impact he makes to the lineup, the speedy receiver kept the defense on their toes, often taking the focus and pressure off of Geroy Simon, Arland Bruce and Andrew Harris.

Despite his minimal stats over the course of the two wins under the dome (a total of 2 receptions / 20yrds and 3 rushes / 20yrds), things looked promising for the young receiver out of Houston, TX.

Heading over to the prairies for a battle with the equally undefeated Saskatchewan Roughriders, Johnson posted his first touchdown of the season with a 69 yard reception with just over three minutes left in the first quarter to give the Lions a 10-3 lead.

Unfortunately for Johnson and the Lions, it was his only play of the night as when he hit the house, Roughrider linebacker Abraham Kromah nailed him in a last ditch effort to halt the 69 yard run (go figure, a Duke grad…and you know how I feel about any Duke related athlete!).

Leaving Saskatchewan with a broke forearm and a broken winning streak, the Lions receiver found out that what could be his breakout season would be halted for 6-8 weeks.

Targeting a early to mid October return, Johnson would have approximately five games left in the regular season to re-position himself in the Lions lineup.

With the Roughriders scheduled to visit BC Place for the final game of the regular season on November 3rd, the opportunity for sweet redemption would be a great way to cap off a season of promise for Kierrie Johnson.
